The Worlds Biggest Welsh Cake

By Anne Bruce

The Welsh town of Bala set a new Guinness World Record for the world’s biggest Welsh cake on St David’s Day (March 1).

Locals used two large griddles to cook a 1.5m-long and 21.9kg heavy Welsh cake over charcoal. The cake was turned mid-way through the cooking process, as it was impossible to flip the cake in traditional fashion due to its size.

After it had been baked, it was then divided into pieces and bagged up in bags marked ‘Part of the Biggest Welsh Cake in the World’. The whole cake was sold, including offcuts and crumbs, within 15 minutes, with proceeds going to local charities.

The town is now expecting certification from the Guinness World Records office in the next few weeks.

Mel Williams, chair of the Bala and Penllyn Tourism Association, told British Baker that Guinness World Records had no entry yet for the biggest-ever Welsh cake, but in order to set a record any entry had to be at least 20kg.

Williams said: “The day exceeded all our expectations. Money was raised for Macmillan, Ty Gobaith, Gobowen, Rotary, and The Urdd. The whole town came together on the day, with willing hands to put Bala on the map of the world – you can’t get better than that!”
